History of the Ploughing

Ploughing as a sport between neighbours has probably gone on for hundreds of years.
In 1931 two men decided to find out which county had the best ploughman. This was called the ultimate challenge. The first inter county ploughing match was organised with 40 entries and the National Ploughing Association was born. The first National Ploughing Championships held that year cost of 9 3s and 5 pence.

The Natioal Ploughing Championships, now in their 76th year is Irelands largest agricultural exhibition and one of Europes primary agricultural events. This year the event took place in Annaharvey farm, Tullamore, Co. Offaly from Sept 25th to Sept 27th 2007.

This three day event had machinery displays, livestock, trade halls, craft village and food fair, education and business centre, shopping, vintage exhibition, fashion show and much more. The ploughing competitions saw 300 competitors 'turning the sod' with the hope of winning a National final and qualifying for next years World Championships in Austria.

My Report by Jerome Gilligan

Yesterday i went to the Ploughing match. I saw lots of things. I saw a horse ploughing. Then i went to the funfair. I saw Richie Kavanagh and got a picture taken with him. I saw Tony and Roseann who are in my classroom. I went on the G Force. It goes really fast and high in the air. After, i got lost but my Daddy came and found me. At the very end of the day I got on a digger at Dig-for-fun.
